Recap - 6 Ft Over Celebrates Title, Dreams of Another

There was no ticker tape parade, no trophy presentation, not even a title clinching game. 6 Ft Over claimed the 2008 Aegon Rec League championship with quite a whimper. The last two games of the season (against another top ranked team) were cancelled due to horrible weather conditions. The title, however, was clinched the previous week when Coach Reiners attempted to setup a championship series with the captain of the only team that had defeated them. The captain respectfully declined stating that his squad wouldn't stand a chance against the size and athleticism of 6 Ft Over in a best of 3 series.

And there it was. Title clinched, dreams realized. 6 Ft Over had gone from 1-14 to 13-1 in just one season. The champs look to repeat starting January 26th. They know everyone will be gunning for them to take back the title.

The injury bug has struck 6 Ft Over hard over the long off-season. 1st Team All Rec League Power Forward Aaron Shupert may miss 1-3 weeks while he recovers from off season surgery. Shupert goes under the knife on the 14th and may miss the first 6 games of the year.

Tension has been brewing between Rec League Coach of the Year Jeff Reiners and his star forward. Reiners scoffs at the notion that Shupert will miss 6 games because of eye surgery.

"We'll fit him with some Kareem Abdul Jabbar's and he'll be ready to go week 1," Reiners stated to reporters at a off-season charity event.

Shupert, understandably is hesitant to risk his eye sight to win another Aegon Basketball Championship, has decline comment the entire off season.

Rec League Comeback player of the year Richard Dengler finished last season very strong answering critics who claimed his off the court habits may effect his play. Dengler has emerged as a dark horse candidate for Rec League MVP in 2009.

Brock Ryan, who finished a distant 6th in 4th Man of the Year voting, will begin this season on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Ryan showed flashes of potential in the 4 games he appeared in last season. Ryan recorded 10 DNP's on the year for reasons ranging from hot wings to over sleeping. Coach Reiners is expecting more appearances from Ryan and has slotted him in the rotation for increased playing time when he comes off the PUP list.

Tony Nieland was signed to another 1 year deal to 6 Ft Over for 2009. Tony revealed to teammates after the season that he was playing with a torn meniscus in his left knee. What that means is that he is one bad cut away from catastrophe and I am one bad cut away from a very funny recap article.
