In a historic YMCA comeback, 6Ft Over Tailgators made a 20 point 3rd quarter deficit disappear and came out victorious 92-84 in a Wednesday night thriller. The Ville proved to be the first real test of the season for the new lineup of 6Ft Over Tailgators. The athletic former Springville ballers ran up an early lead using their size and speed to get easy transition buckets. Meanwhile, 6Ft Over Tailgators struggled from the field early and were relying on contested jumpers, trying to find a rhythm.
Manager Aaron Shupert started the game but was bothered by some nagging injuries and was ineffective offensively. Reserve Justin Hasenmiller came in and gave the team a spark off the bench in the first quarter. Justin relied on his energy to out hustle his man getting some key lay-ups during the flow of the game.
Point guard JR Russell started off slow but settled down as the game went on, hitting back-to-back 3 pointers that helped close the gap in the 3rd quarter. Nick Hach added some key buckets while attacking the offensive glass and converting on several well executed pick and rolls.
The true star of the show, however, was Tyler Albers. After making several runs during the game, 6Ft Over Tailgators still found themselves down 20 points mid way through the 3rd quarter. At this time Tyler decided to put the team on his back and carry them to the finish line. Tyler, who easily score over ½ of the teams points abused his defender, taking him to the hole over and over again. On one play Albers crossed over his man so badly that not only did the Ville’s best defender’s ankles break, his spirit did too. In a true Jordanesque performance, Albers was the games MVP.
Down the stretch 6Ft Over clamped down the defense and stopped 4 straight attempts by The Ville to keep the game in reach. JR hit 2 free throws to seal the victory with less than a minute to play. Nick Hach rebounded from last weeks dunking debacle to cap the game off with a fast break and thunderous slam as the clock expired.
After the game beers were served at Tailgators headquarters in celebration.
